Ascend Solutions was founded to solve a problem that has existed in healthcare revenue cycle management for decades: the absence of data that tells you where complexity is being created, what it costs in time and revenue, and how to prevent it.

The insight did not come from a technology company. It came from direct healthcare operations — from owning, scaling, and selling a multi-location physical therapy practice, and then recognizing that revenue cycle failures were not billing failures. They were structural failures caused by unmeasured complexity. Ascend was built to fix that.

Founder

Robert M. Kowalick, Jr., PT — CEO & Founder

Robert Kowalick is a healthcare entrepreneur, revenue cycle architect, and root-cause problem solver with more than four decades of experience in clinical practice, multi-location healthcare operations, and revenue cycle management.

He began his career as a hospital-based physical therapist before founding Optimax Physical Therapy, which he built from two employees and one location into a multi-million-dollar, seven-location organization with more than 150 employees. He sold the company to NovaCare, Inc. and led post-acquisition integration and financial performance oversight for the Michigan market.

That experience gave Robert a ground-level view of how poorly designed revenue cycle structures were limiting healthcare practice value. The revenue cycle performance of his multi-billion-dollar buyer made clear that the near-perfect outcomes his own practice had achieved were the exception — not the standard. The standard was broken.

Robert founded Revenue Cycle Solutions in 1998, originally as Reimbursement Specialists, to build a better structure. Over the next two decades, RCS evolved from a billing service into an outcome-based revenue cycle management firm powered by a model built on measuring, calculating, and engineering the relationship between Billing Time Demand and Billing Time Supply.

To make that model scalable and platform-independent, Robert founded Ascend Solutions and developed Practice Data Solutions (PDS) — a revenue cycle time analytics and intelligence platform that converts the billing process into a comprehensive RCC data engine. PDS serves as the foundational data layer for RCS and is available to any healthcare practice or RCM operation seeking to build a better revenue cycle structure.

Robert has also led performance optimization work in high-performance environments outside of healthcare, including contributions to injury rate reductions through data-driven training interventions with Naval Special Warfare.

Today, Robert's focus is on advancing measurable, root-cause-driven revenue cycle intelligence and helping healthcare leaders stabilize cash flow, improve efficiency, and increase enterprise value.

RCS is Ascend's founding proof of concept. Every outcome result RCS has produced is grounded in PDS data. Practices that want an outsourced revenue cycle management partner with RCS.
